It depends on what kind of church it is and also what kind of event. Some churches are more formal for actual services, or events which are held on church grounds. In this case a more formal shirt is best. However, there are many modern churches that allow any type of clothing. Obviously you should not wear anything immodest, but anything which you feel comfortable in, should be fine at these more contemporary churches.
