Who found hieroglyphs?

The ancient Egyptians first developed the type of writing that we later called hieroglyphics, which is part-picture, part-sound symbol. No one knows who first developed it. The Egyptian culture was already ancient when the Romans invaded, 2000 years ago. Under Roman rule, the Egyptian culture fell into decay and the written language was lost. When European explorers came to Egypt in the 1700s and began actually studying the ancient writings, hardly anything was known about hieroglyphics, and no one was able to read them. In 1799, a curious stone tablet was found in Egypt near a town called Rashid by the Arabs, and Rosetta by the French. The stone was engraved in three languages, one of which was ancient Greek, which was still readable; another was Egyptian hieroglyphics . Scholars eventually realized that the stone bore the same inscription in three languages, and that knowing the text in Greek could help them read the Egyptian on the stone. Ever since, the phrase "Rosetta Stone" has been used to mean "the key to knowledge" or "way to translate". The scientist who is most credited with translating the Rosetta Stone was Jean-François Champollion.
