Because of all the other stuff in space it hits deforms the shape. To be honest it most likely wern't a good shape to start with as they are just bits of rock broken off from planets etc.

Most space junk is in orbit around Earth, meaning that, while Earth's gravity continuously pulls it down, it is moving so fast laterally that it never hits the ground.

Radiation waves can travel in space, which is are later converted into heat when it hits matter.
