If it is a 1/2 ton you MUST put the 4L60E in it. The 3/4 tons used the 4L80E in them.

You can ONLY use a 1996 model transmission on a 1996 model. The 1/2 tons have the 4L60E trans and the 3/4 tons used the 4L80E in them.

NO. NOT EVEN CLOSE. Chevy redesigned the engines and transmissions in late 1999. If you need a transmission for the 96 truck Then the only 1 you can use is a 1996 4L60E transmission. If it wasn't a 1996 model then finding 1 would be NO problem.

No. The 2wd and 4wd trans cases are compleatly different.
NO.. Not even close. You can not use a transmission over the year of 1999. Chevy REDESIGNED there transmissions and engines in the late months of 1999
