The answer to this question depends on several things. First what nation is the medic from? Second is he in combat; and if so is where is he?

Assuming he is American, deployed in a hostile environment somewhere overseas like Iraq or Afghanistan, he will likely carry a M-9 9mm pistol, or and M-16/4 rifle. However remember, a medic's job is heal, not to kill. A medics weapon is supposed to be for self defence only; per the Geneva conventions if medical personnel take a offensive posture they loose their protected status.

When I was a Medic in the Infantry, I was issued a Berretta (M-9) 9mm pistol; we where also assigned the standard M-16 rifles, however we where not in a combat zone and chose to only carry the M-9s, if we did have the M-16/4 mostly they stayed locked in our vehicle.

Another Medic's Answer:

It is true that according to the Geneva conventions agreement, medics are not allowed to carry offensive weapons. During my last deployment to Baghdad, I carried the M-4, M-9, and 2 frag grenades. there were some missions where I also carried a shot gun with both lethal and non lethal rounds. What a medic carries as a "defensive" weapon is often offensive weapons, because killing the "bad guy" before he kills the "good guy" is preventive medicine.

When the medic is not treating any wounded he acts just like any other soldier, as part of the fire team if necessary, providing security etc. Most commanders direct their medics to stay in the background as much as possible, however, in the field the medic blends in with his team until needed to treat the wounded.
