If the wood is old enough, it can be used. Do not use freshly cut wood as it will smoke too much. there are no poisons in grapefruit tree wood, so that is not an issue.
The smokehouse I once toured had three types of wood on hand: Oak, Hickory, and Pine. The Hickory was the main wood for the fire. The Oak was used to 'cool the fire', and the Pine was used to 'heat up the fire'. In the lower 48, Mesquite wood has become popular. Happy 'cuing!
Any kind of wood... but i use about 4 layers of thin ply wood
Pva wood glue
Softened Cedar Wood.
The furniture is made from oak wood.
If there is a possibility this is CCA treated wood, it is not a good idea. This is the "green wood" treated lumber common for the past 40 years of so. It was used for exterior wood to resist rot and insects. CCA stands for Chrome-Copper-Arsenic- the 3 metals used to treat the wood. Smoke from this wood is extremely unhealthy. I would not use it.
Hard wood the tighter the grain the better.
There is Maple, Ash wood (best wood), and there is core wood.
