Petroleum is used in different forms to propel almost all vehicles, - cars, trucks, trains, ships and aircraft all run on some sort of petroleum. Oils, lubricants for machines and you skin(vasoline), some household product and even make-ups have petroleum based/by products. Asphalt/tar and some plastics.
The Germans used many different aircraft in WW1. They had many observer aircraft and small fighter as well as seaplanes and some bombers.

The paint that is used when painting an aircraft is high adhesion fire resitant paint. This is due to the fact that the aircraft will travel at very fast speeds, and the paint needs to be certian that it will not peel while in the air.
