A chef really doesn't need formal schooling, but it helps. Some people seem to have a natural talent when it comes to food, but to really express that talent they can learn more by attending a school or culinary institution for becoming a chef. There could be one in your area and I think the school is 9 months or a year to attend for training. You can train in a particular area like deserts or meats or you can go longer and learn more. Depending on how serious you are about this you could go on to become a great chef.

It is still possible to start working in a restaurant kitchen and work your way up. Now, many people take post-high school courses either at a college or at a specialized school of culinary arts.
