Soldiers and their families were being carried as passengers on the Birkenhead.
Take off speed depends on the make of airliner, the airport, the number of passengers and cargo being carried, the distance to the destination and the weather.
Being a hub for US Airways, the fifth largest airline in terms of passengers carried in U.S, then yes it is a big airport.

Seat belts help to prevent front seat passengers and the driver from being flung through the windscreen in the event of a crash. Rear seat belts prevent passengers on the rear seats from being flung forwards and crashing into people on the front seats. They also prevent people being flung outside of the vehicle.
I read around the net and did not find any instances of air raids on Birkenhead, one of the places where children were sent to be kept safe from the Blitz bombings. You may be able to find out more from the people of the web site posted below on the related link. There were certainly some major air raids on Birkenhead, the worst being in 1941. My Uncle Ernest was killed in this one & my dad had to identify his body in a mortuary crowded with dead victims of the bombing. Children were NOT evacuated to Birkenhead for safety. On the contrary, they were evacuated OUT. I should know, because we took in 2 children from B'head, & there were other evacuees billeted at several homes in our road. We lived about 7 miles out of B'head. Merseyside (i.e. Liverpool & Birkenhead was a prime target for the Luftwaffe because L'pool was the major port for the transatlantic convoys, and they built ships & submarines at B'head.
