During the middle ages dying clothes or material was mostly carried out by women. Various fruit berries, like juniper and redcurrants, would be collected and reduced to pulp by some form of pressing method, then heated and strained to extract all the colour from them; very much like apples are pressed to make cider and grapes to make wine.
