The Himalayas dont allow clouds to passt through the mountains causing very little water to arrive on the other side. another example of this would be the desert in Chile right next to the Andes mountains.

The Gobi desert doesn't have many sand dunes like the Sahara. It has more rocky outcrops and gravel plains
