Israeli Sign Language (ISL) is the common sign language of the deaf community of Israel. It is spoken by about 10,000 people as a first language, and another 10,000 can speak it as a second language.

Al-Sayyid Bedouin Sign Language is used only in some bedouin areas, but in general, deaf Arab Israelis speak ISL. There are also a few other sign languages, but they are mostly unstudied.

ISL is closely related to German Sign Language and also has some borrowings from American Sign Language. In 1873 in Germany, Marcus Reich, a German Jew, opened a special school for Jewish deaf children.

At the time, it was considered one of the best of its kind, which made it popular with Jewish deaf children from all over the world as well as non-Jews. In 1932 several teachers from this school opened the first school for Jewish deaf children in Jerusalem.

The sign language they used started out as German Sign Language, but with large amounts of Immigration, it took elements from many languages, and today it's considered a German Creole Sign Language; however, it is now too far apart from German Sign Language to be considered a dialect.

In addition to ISL, there is also Hebrew manually coded language used as a tool to teaching deaf children the Hebrew language, and for communication between deaf and hearing people, but this is not natural sign language, and it is not used among the deaf community in Israel.

The Manual Alphabet for ISL fingerspelling is based on the one-handed alphabet used in the United States. It has a few extra handshapes for sounds not found in English, and it has some variations based on the shapes of Hebrew letters.
