"to gawk" is an early modern English word (from about 1775) apparently representing Old English word meaning fool, equivalent to ga ( gol ) foolish + -oc -ock; used attributively in gawk hand, gallock hand left hand.
Another theory is that it's from the Middle English word gowen, "to stare"
