There were no sermons in medieval times.

Services were conducted entirely in Latin, which most of the congregation did not understand; they attended church simply to witness the service, not to take part in it. Since regular attendance was obligatory many people would have got used to the services and would know when to say "Amen" or some of the responses in Latin, even if they did not know the meaning.

Gerald of Wales, who accompanied the Archbishop of Canterbury on a tour of Wales in 1188 to recruit men for the Crusade, reported that both he and the Archbishop addressed the crowds in Latin, which then had to be translated into Welsh by Archdeacon Alexander.
