Latin is a dead language. No one speaks it now, but it was the language of the Romans. The Romance Languages were formed from Latin. These six languages are: French, Romanian, Italian, Portugeuse, Spanish, and Catalan. When the Romans conquered a city or nation, they forced the people of that city/nation to learn Latin. Already having their own language, the people combined both languages to form what are today called the Romance Languages.
There were many languages which were spoken in the Roman Empire before the Romans arrived, Italic languages, Etruscan, Illyrian languages, Greek, Syriac, Phoenician, Hebrew, Egyptian, Berber languages, Iberian languages, Celtic languages. etc.
Babies are born with the ability to learn any language, but their ability to learn multiple languages depends on exposure to those languages. Babies raised in multilingual environments are more likely to learn multiple languages.
