1. It gave the Union soldiers a moral reason to fight. As a result, there were more passionate Union soldiers, and an overall stronger army, such an idea was doubtful. In fact General in Chief Henry Wager Halleck appointed a special internal figure, Charles Halpine to quiet the protests of white Union soldiers on even the idea of having Fee Blacks in their ranks.

There is no evidence that Union soldiers were at war with the risk of making their wives windows or their children fatherless.

2. It gave the African Americans in the Union freedom to join the army. In the Civil War about 200,000 African Americans fought, and 40,000 gave their lives to the cause.

Union soldiers did not require Lincoln's two Emancipation Proclamations as a moral reason to fight. It was no secret that slaves were not freed in Washington DC until 1862. Nor were Union soldiers not aware that the border states remained slave states throughout the war. Clearly a good number of Union soldiers were from these very same states. Lincoln's purpose was to implement a war measure that was supposed to create a social crisis in the South. No one expected the Confederate slaves to stage a major revolt and they didn't. What it did do was allow slaves working on territory captured by the Union to be set free by Union military commanders.

As an aside, Lincoln had to relieve two generals who decided on their own to decree slaves free in areas where they operated. Lincoln made it clear that any sort of "liberation" required his consent.
