the earth has 4 layers

the crust

the mantle

the outer core

the inner core

the crust is divided into giant sections called plates

on plate broundrys, where plate meets another plate, there can be volcanoes and many earthquakes may accur there.

due to currents in the mantle these plates move very slowly and different plates travel in different directions so on the boundries the plates can get wedged together and stuck. when the plates finally give way a lot of energy is released and shockwaves travel out from that area. this is what we call an earthquake

so earthquakes occur in the outter most layer of the earth

also known as the crust
