There is not one "major" or "most" contributing factor in anorexia. It varies per case and per individual. Some commonly important ones are...

*low self-esteem

*low body image

*teasing / bullying (often about weight or appearances)

*depression

*family history (influenced, but this is only a theory and is not yet totally confirmed)

*dieting gone wrong

Anorexia Nervosa usually develops unnoticed. The condition may set in as early as childhood or as late middle age. This condition is characterized by irrational fear of gaining weight, which may be attributed to the following reasons:

  • a traumatic experience of being ridiculed
  • witnessed other people's embarassment caused by their weight
  • expression of a significant person's preference for thin or slim individuals
  • peer pressure
  • imitation of a public figure

Hormones (and genes) in (having to do with) the brain have a likely effect of making a person anorexic. Constant pressure from society judging on the concept of beauty is mostly what makes a person get pressured into becoming anorexic in order to "become beautiful" or "socially acceptable." A person who develops anorexia might be self-conscience of their appearance and has a goal to look perfect in every way. Also, if there is a family member that also has had anorexia in the past or in the present, a person is most likely to learn behaviors of anorexia from the family member whom said person has observed these behaviors in.
