Japan was already one of the advanced nations before WW2, though many factories were bombed, their most precious technology and people were passed on. The people was hardworking and educated. Retired soldiers provided cheap labor and the destruction of the old factories allowed building of the most advanced ones for replacement.

Post-war Japan benefited by being occupied by the richest nation on earth at the time..the U.S. The U.S. had a vested interest in helping to rebuild Japan so that it would not become fertile ground for a USSR sponsored communist movement. Also America found it a pain to support the needs of the entire Japanese population, because their industries were destroyed by America. The rebuilding program was actually helped by the outbreak of the Korean War where it was found more efficient to produce war material in Japan rather than ship it in from the U.S. The same effect could be seen during the Vietnam War. All this allowed Japanese industry to modernize and expand very quickly.
