Achilles' parents were getting married, and everyone was invited except Eris, the goddess of strife. In retaliation, she tossed a golden apple inscribed, "to the fairest," among the wedding guests. Each goddess in attendance thought that the apple was for her; it was eventually determined that the three most beautiful were Aphrodite, Athena, and Hera. They asked Zeus to choose between them, but he knew that could only end badly for him, so he made Paris, the prince of Troy, choose. Each goddess bribed him with something, but Aphrodite offered him the love of the most beautiful woman on earth, who happened to be Helen of Troy. Paris picked Aphrodite and kidnapped Helen from Sparta, where she lived with her husband, King Menelaus. Menelaus was not very pleased, so he and his brother Agamemnon raised an army and sailed to Troy to get Helen back.
