Within a year of starting his term, William H. Taft had aligned his administration with conservative Democrats, an act angering the Progressive Party of Theodore Roosevelt. He fired a good friend of Roosevelt's, Gifford Pinchot, former head of the Forest Service. These actions split the party and angered Roosevelt, who faced off against Taft when the Republicans failed to nominate him over the incumbent, as a result Woodrow Wilson was able to take advantage of the division and become the next president.
There were a few different sources of conflict between President Roosevelt and President Taft. One of the conflicts between them had to do with Roosevelt being more conservative, and Taft being more moderate. Judiciary power was another course of conflict between the two. President Roosevelt wanted to limit the power, while President Taft wanted it to remain the same.
After Roosevelt served two terms, he retired from the presidential office, and supported William Howard Taft. Roosevelt was confident that Taft would continue his plans for reform... Theodore Roosevelt's colonial ancestors had been Dutch patroon and held valuable farmland in the Hudson Valley in New York. His family happened to continue to do well when New York became part of the British colonies on the Atlantic coast. Roosevelt's family, however, most likely would have been wealthier had the Duke of York not caused the Dutch to leave in 1664. Roosevelt would later write that the Duke of York was a dull leader and not worth renaming New Amsterdam to New York.
