It is possible to debate who really started the war, whether it was the British for seizing American sailors at sea and impressing them into the British navy (which was certainly an outrageous action) or the Americans for going to war over it, rather than making polite diplomatic protests or other non-violent responses.

There were two causes for the War of 1812. One was the Impressment (hijacking them and making them work on British ships) of American soldiers by British ships. The second was a desire for the United States to expand their territory.

The War of 1812 was a military conflict fought between the forces of the United States of America and those of the British Empire. The Americans declared war in 1812 for a number of reasons, including trade restrictions, impressment of American merchant sailors into the Royal Navy, British support of American Indian tribes against American expansion, and the humiliation of American honor. Until 1814, the British Empire adopted a defensive strategy, repelling multiple American invasions of the provinces of Upper and Lower Canada. However, the Americans won control of Lake Erie in 1813, seized parts of western Ontario, and destroyed the power of Britain's Indian allies both in Canada and in the Southwest. With the defeat of Napoleon in 1814, the British adopted a more aggressive strategy, sending in large combat armies. British victory at the Battle of Bladensburg in August 1814 allowed the British to capture and burn Washington, D.C. American victories in September 1814 and January 1815 repulsed British invasions of New York and New Orleans.

So the answer is the united states of America.

The war of 1812 was fought between the Americans and British-Canadians. Now to learn what started the War, you need background information......

-the French entered the time period in their history called 'The French Revolution'

-The Spanish gave the French Emperor, Napoleon, Louisiana Territory because the Spanish were bankrupt and couldn't run it

-Napoleon didn't want that land so, he sold it to the Americans for a big price, an event in history know today as, the Louisiana Purchase

-the French then turned their attention to Europe and started fighting the British, for the 65465140 time (if you know world history you'll understand)

With this in mind the Americans needed to colonize the West or the Native, Mexicans or the British would. So the event in Americans history called the Lewis and Clark Expedition started

there was no direct start of the War of 1812

note***

Thomas Jefferson believed that taking Canada was 'a mere matter of marching'
