Only as much force as is necessary to stop the assailant. In defending yourself or another you cannot use excessive force against an attacker. For example, you cannot take an attacker's life unless it is clear he will, by his actions, take yours or another's And you must be able to prove in a court of law that such force as was used was necessary, otherwise you can end up in prison for a long time. Also, after you have stopped the attacker with only as much force as necessary, you do not wait around and wait for him to get back up and start where he left off. As soon as he has been temporarily incapacitated it is your legal duty to try to find an avenue of escape. It would also help if there are witnesses who can testify that you had to take whatever action you took, and unless you know the person being attacked you may actually end up aiding the one who actually started the fight.

Does Washington state have a self defense law?

In Washington State there is a self-defense argument (RCW 9A.16.020), which states when it is lawful to use force. This affirmative defense may be used when the defendant was preventing another from being injured by an assailant often referred to as "defense of others." There are other exceptions that involve detaining burglars and using force to subdue a mentally ill person from doing harm to themselves or others. An affirmative defense essentially allows the defendant to admit to the crime but also to explain the circumstances behind the event and to justify the use of force in their case.

What are some examples of self-defense cases and how do they demonstrate the legal concept of self-defense?

Some examples of self-defense cases include a person using force to protect themselves from an attacker, a homeowner defending their property from a burglar, or a victim fighting back against an assailant. These cases demonstrate the legal concept of self-defense by showing that individuals have the right to use reasonable force to protect themselves or others from harm when faced with imminent danger.
