Why should you start with low power on a light mircroscope?

Because on high power the magnification is so high you cannot tell where you are on the surface of the object, and so cannot adjust the position to the place you really want.

Sunlight contains frequencies across the whole frequency range, which appears white. An object that appears white reflects all frequencies.
