Edward III adopted St. George as a patron of the Knights of the Garter, his new order of chivalry, and proclaimed him as a patron saint of England.

Saint George was known as the warrior saint and was very popular during the Middle Ages. By the time of the Second Crusade the red cross was being used by Knights Templar as well as French and English troops. Eventually the popularity of Saint George among the crusaders began to gradually associate him with the red cross already in use.
