As a child Francis Xavier craved earthly greatness and power. However in 1528 St. Ignatius arrived at Xavier's college in St. Barbara. St. Ignatius told him "what will it profit a man to gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?" This statement caused Xavier to rethink his life and begin to follow the teachings of Ignatius.
Francis Xavier was canonized on March 12, 1622, by Pope Gregory XV.
