Then when brought home by his beloved sister Fan she married and then dies in childbirth. this breaks his heart and he swears not harden against the things that can hurt him Sadly he does so and focuses on money making. Belle his betrothed sees the change in him and dislikes the person the becomes. He breaks off their engagement which further hurts Scrooge. This was to effect his way of life from then on
