In the end, the Empire was brought down by a combination of the Fourth Crusade (which sacked Constantinople, divided the Empire, and destroyed its structural integrity as a nation), a series of civil wars in the 14th century, and the rise of the powerful Ottoman Turks, who finally captured Constantinople in 1453.
