What made trench warfare unbearable?

All in all trench warfare had a lot of negative aspects. These include:

  • Diseases (trench foot etc)
  • Rats
  • Constant bombardment by artillery from the enemy and your own side
  • Boredom alternating with fear
  • Danger of collapse and live burial from shells landing nearby
  • Toxic gases which could flow into the trenches
  • Enemy raids resulting in hand to hand fighting
  • Snipers
  • Poor food
  • Limited medical attention for wounds
  • Dead bodies scattered all around the trenches which could not be recovered due to snipers (see above) and thus were food for the rats (see above)
  • Cold
  • Pooled water and sewage
  • No beds or bunks
