Before the 1920s, women wore plain floor length dresses with tight corsets and had very long hair. A fashion revolution occurred in the 1920s. Women wore knee length dresses, bobbed their hair and pile themselves with accessories such as long pearl necklaces, gloves and headbands. Fur, sequins, fringe, diamonds and feathers were abundant in fashion. The glamorous fashion reflected the booming economy also known as "the roaring twenties". Drop waisted dress were common as were cloche hats and kitten heels. Fashion changed in the 1920s to accommodate the new lifestyles of people who now went out dancing every weekend. Fashion needed to be easy to move in but still look good.

Fashion in 1890-1920 is considered the belle epoque or Victorian era of fashion. Fashions included several layers of stockings, bustles, and corsets. Long dresses and skirt sets and various styles and colors were the fashion. As a lady, you would find yourself changing your outfit very many times each day. One for mornings, one for a ride in an automobile, one for your walk in the park, one for tea, several evening and ball gowns, and many more things society expected you to wear. Fashions varied towards the time of the world war, because of rations on fabric. Fashion during the belle epoque era was generally very beautiful and began to shape fashion today.
Before the 1920's, "new fashion", women would wear long dresses with corsets. But because of WWI, more fabric was needed for the soldier's uniforms. It was also convenient not to have a long dress dragging on the ground and getting muddy and dirty. It was a new change for everyone. They wore skirts to the knee and started to wear make-up. Or as some people know them as, Flappers.
World War One changed women's roles in society. they saw themselves more as equals and clothing for them became more comfortable. Also, there was always a desire to emulate the rich and raise one's status. Flapper style dresses were easy for women to make at home, hence the boom.
