vacuum leak. check the evap switch at the back of the engine just below the coil packs. the two vacuum hose can be easily pulled apart when changing the spark plugs.

Yes, the bolt that holds the harmonic balancer in place on a 2001 Chevy Malibu is reverse thread. I learned that the hard way and stripped the head of my bolt down to nothing. And the bolt is almost impossible to find, because they no longer make them.
on the 2000 Malibu 3.1 it is on passenger side between engine and firewall. if not there, check near right strut tower!!~ the cap is marked with a "L" on it, about 2 feet down.
