'Classic Film' will mean different things to different people. An older film that is well thought of. It does not have to have been successful on it's initial release. Some films were ahead of their time when new. It also does not have to be a 'quality' film. Some films are in the "so bad it's good" category. An example would be "Plan 9 from Outer Space" (1959). The reason it's entertaining is the fact that it's so badly made. Another classsic film is one that sets new standards or moves a type of filmmaking forward. "2001: A Space Odyssey" (1968) is in this category. It's the first modern Science Fiction film.
A movie becomes a classic when it is still watched and enjoyed many years, decades, and generations after it was made. Only time can make a movie a classic; instant classics are very rare.
