Size matters!

This is what makes a light soft. On an overcast day the light is very soft because the source is the entire sky. On a sunny day, the light is hard because the source is a tiny spot away in the distance.

A small lightsource like a flashgun is hard, but if you bounce the light off a wall or ceiling, then the lit area becomes the light source and, being large, makes the light soft.
