Fish require gills to breathe underwater. Humans require lungs and a more consecrated form of oxygen. When water gets into the lungs, it will drown the human. Since the torso is human form and the lower portion of the mermaid is in the form of a fish, the most vital element of sustaining the life of such a creature is compromised. Without oxygen, it can not live.....at least, not as it is presented in common depictions.

There is not a scientific name for a Cyclops. This is because a Cyclops is a fictional creature so it isn't able to be classified.

No one can become a mermaid they are entirely fictional
Mermaids are fictional creatures, they do not exist in nature and therefore there is no place one can go to see one. However there are statues made, representing this fictional creature and perhaps the most famous of these is the Little Mermaid sitting on her rock wistfully watching the harbor in Copenhagen, Denmark. see the link I will place below.
As the -maid part might imply, a mermaid is a femal mythical creature. The male equivalent is called a merman.
