Red is the most rare of diamond colours. It is believed that the colour is generated within the gem during its voyage to the surface of the earth -- caused by changes to its electron structure in this process.

Diamonds are erupted to the surface of the earth by volcanic pipes from the very deep reaches of the earth's mantle where they are formed.
