If the vapor pressure of the material of the solid is greater than the partial pressure of the same material in the atmosphere around it, it will turn to gas. The process of direct transition from solid to gas is called sublimation. Some solids, like dry ice (frozen CO2) will sublimate at room pressure. Others would require dropping the pressure very low.

As an alternative, you could raise the temperature of the solid (consequently raising the vapor pressure) or get it to melt and then turn to gas when it boils.
