Turtles are reptiles (not amphibians either, as some believe). Reptiles are characterised by:

  • being vertebrates
  • having scaly skin (not scales)
  • being cold-blooded (mammals are warm-blooded)
  • breathing air through lungs, not gills
  • usually lay eggs, though some reptiles have live young
