A drug is simply any substance that can modify the functioning of the body.

So any substance that can alter the functioning of the body is a drug. Therefore, because of the pharmacological effects of foods, vitamins, hormones, microbial, metabolites, plants, snake venoms, stings, products of decay, air pollutants, pesticides, minerals, synthetic chemicals, virtually all foreign materials (very few are completely inert), and many materials normally in the body are drugs.

Alcohol (ethanol) is a chemical that suppresses nerve cells, directly affecting the brain, and to a lesser extent the rest of the nervous system. The results, as with many other drugs, is to alter the brain's response in areas including perception, cognition, and reflex action. After consumption of alcoholic beverages, an individual may experience euphoria, lack of inhibition, emotional outbursts, poor judgment, and diminished perception and awareness. Depending on the individual, sufficient alcohol consumption (alcohol poisoning) can cause unconsciousness, permanent nerve damage, or death.

(In removing alcohol from the body, the liver and/or kidneys can suffer cumulative damage.)
