What makes cars smoke?

First determine the color of the smoke.

Blue smoke is generally from worn piston rings, worn valve guides, worn valve guide seals.

White smoke is generally from engine coolant getting into the combustion chamber via a cracked head or bad head gasket.

Black smoke is generally from excessive fuel or "flooding" occurring from faulty fuel management.
