Venus (and Mercury) are closer to the Sun than Earth. This means that we can only safely observe these bodies when they are either side of the Sun which means that they appear as crescents in our telescopes.

Further Venus is covered in a thick layer of opaque clouded atmosphere which entirely obscures its solid surface.

With radar from both earth and space craft orbiting Venus. just as radar penetrates terrestrial clouds to show an aircraft pilot a runway even through fog, so too radar penetrates the Venusian clouds, revealing the planet's surface.

The surface of Venus can not be seen in optical light due to an immensely think atmosphere.

However, it can be seen by radar and because of this most of the planet has been mapped.

Venus's Atmosphere is made out of sulphuric acid, which melts and corrodes metal. Its surface is covered with fiery volcanoes, and the robots we send cannot stand the heat and acid
