Koalas and pandas do not fall under the same levels of classification. the panda is a bear; the koala is not, despite often being incorrectly referred to as a "koala bear".

Koalas and pandas and both mammals, because they both have fur and nurture their young on mothers' milk. However, the panda is a placental mammals and the koala is a marsupial. This is where the similarity ends, and where the classification levels diverge.

No. Pandas and koalas are not even in the same order or family, let alone species. Koalas are marsupials, and not members of the bear family at all. The koala's family is Phascolarctidae.

Pandas are placental mammals, and true members of the bear family, which is Ursidae.

The only way in which koalas and bears are the same is that they are both mammals, and therefore share certain mammalian characteristics. They are both warm-blooded animals with a covering of fur, and which give birth to live young who are nourished with milk, and who are vertebrates.

Other mammalian characteristics that bears and koalas share are the following anatomical features:

- A flexible neck with seven cervical vertebrae

- Enhanced neocortex development

- Sound is produced by the larynx (a modified region of the trachea)

- Limbs are oriented vertically

- A heart with 4 chambers

- Internal temperature is generally high

- Egg development occurs in the uterus

- They have sweat glands

- A single jaw bone

- Diaphragm

- Three bones for a middle ear

The koala is not a bear because it is a marsupial, whereas a bear is a placental mammal. Marsupials and placental mammals are different sub-groups of the mammal family.
