But the ones refered to as this are usually called this because they do not produce their own energy (i.e. Autotrophic...Photosynthesis) but rather actively hunt prey to get energy.
Which is what animals do, so they are animal-like in that manner.

Some protists are like animals - they have simple digestive systems, they are motile.
ADDED:
The important point, as already stated until edited, is that protists are eukaryotes, just like plants and animals. This is the connecting trait that shows common ancestry in eukarya.
