Rats are notorious for being able to survive and thrive just about anywhere. They can swim, climb, cling, shrink to fit through small spaces (but if they eat too much, they cannot get out..ha), live through seasonal changes (mostly because they can find warm places), and reproduce almost as fast as rabbits. They're really smart, people fear them and, I think, the main reason is because they can eat everything (including their own feces because they contain undigested products). They're omnivores.

Rats cannot vomit, which makes them vulnerable to poison since they are unable to expel the toxic substance from their bodies once ingested. This inability to vomit can result in the poison accumulating to lethal levels within their system.
Australia is known as fascinating because of the wild monkey rats that inhabit the waters there. Of course the monkey rats are only found on the western coast and the central inland sea, so just go there if that is the attraction.
