Rats are notorious for being able to survive and thrive just about anywhere. They can swim, climb, cling, shrink to fit through small spaces (but if they eat too much, they cannot get out..ha), live through seasonal changes (mostly because they can find warm places), and reproduce almost as fast as rabbits. They're really smart, people fear them and, I think, the main reason is because they can eat everything (including their own feces because they contain undigested products). They're omnivores.
