Wish it was a bit more specific, but I'll answer as best as I can.

All of the things I list have extremely uncommon exceptions, but most life on earth follows these rules.

All living things require sunlight as an outside energy source to survive.

All living things require oxygen to keep their cells alive and working.

All living things require water to keep hydrated.

All living things need to reproduce in order to keep their species alive.

All living things need food to convert to energy.

More specifically:

If their food isn't made using photosynthesis (conversion of sunlight into energy, e.g. plants) then it must be able to move around and find food to ingest through the mouth. It must also be able to know where it is, most commonly using eyesight. Feeling, hearing, and smelling can also be ways for animals to find their way if they are blind. Also, they must be able to sense danger so they can escape it and encourage the continuation of their species. Last, if you believe in evolution, all living things came from the forming of amino acids which became more complex and developed into different species depending on location and needs of survival.
