An examination of a character in the context of the work of literature in which he or she appears
From a folk perspective, a hero can be any character, male or female, who undertakes a major ordeal and overcomes in the end. Typically, this person starts as a regular joe and winds up being forced to undertake tasks due to social injustice, environmental disaster, or trying to cure an illness that has overtaken someone who is close to the main character. In the case of Peter Pan, he is a hero as he defends the youth in Never Never Land against the powerful dichotomy of Captain Hook. He may not fit most people's definition of a hero, but by folk standards his ordeals, his triumphs, and his victory in the end makes him a hero. This is not to mention the typically appearance of a supernatural helper (Tinkerbell) and the other common characteristics found in fairy tales.
The literary term is "agent of action." Often, this is the protagonist or "hero."
An epic hero is a literary character; a superhero is a comic-book character.
The hero makes mistakes
Vladimir Propp developed a character theory for studying media texts and productions, which indicates that there were 7 broad character types in the 100 tales he analysed, which could be applied to other media:The villain (struggles against the hero)The donor (prepares the hero or gives the hero some magical object)The (magical) helper (helps the hero in the quest)The princess (person the hero marries, often sought for during the narrative)The false hero (perceived as good character in beginning but emerges as evil)The dispatcher (character who makes the lack known and sends the hero off)The hero or victim/seeker hero, reacts to the donor, weds the princess
