If the Earth were alone in space, I suppose it would be floating or hovering -- in space. However, gravity is what makes the earth revovle around the sun. The earth has momentum -- mass in motion that wants to move in a straight line. However, the Sun and the Earth have a mutual gravitational attraction so, instead of heading off in a straight line, the earth orbits around the sun.

The Earth, and each of the other planets, is under the gravitational pull of the Sun. It's own momentum and the gravitation pull of all the other objects in both the solar system, and the rest of the universe, keeps it whizzing along in its orbit around the Sun, which in turn is orbiting around the centre of our galaxy.

The Earth is not exactly 'floating' - it is fairly zipping along.

Einstein said that space holds up all of the mass in the universe and can be curved to change its path by larger objects, such as the sun. Humans cannot percieve this because we are like two dimensional creatures drawn on a sheet of paper that cannot percieve the sheet of paper. If the paper were to be crumpled we would feel a "force" as we traveled along the hills and valleys, but would not understand why. Since we only percieve two dimensions, we would think we are walking in a straight line. If you consider what is made possible by adding one dimension to a two dimensional world, you can imagine the mind boggling complexities of adding one dimension to a three dimensional world. Remeber that we evolved to avoid being eaten by three dimensional creatures, so percieving the fourth dimension would not have helped us much.

because the Sun's gravity keeps us in orbit around it

Does the earth float in space or is sitting on something?

The Earth is not floating in space; it is actually orbiting the Sun due to gravitational forces. It is not sitting on anything specific but is instead held in its orbit by the gravitational pull of the Sun.
