The check engine light goes on because there is a problem with the engine control system. Until the problem is fixed it will continue to come back on even after you clear it by disconnecting the battery.

You will need a engine scanner to do that. But if you did not fix the problem that made it come on then it will just come back on. You need to have engine scaned to see whats wrong.

my check engine light came on and would go off, come back on again. when i had it checked, it was my gas cap, it was leaking.
That requires an engine scanner to do that. If you don't repaire what made the light come on in the first place it will just come back on.
