Why might antivirus and antispyware software not detect malicious software?
Antivirus and antispyware software might not detect malware because the virus database signature has not been updated. Malware is released constantly and it takes time to analyze it and add its signature to the database of an antivirus.There can be a lot of reasons why. Your software (definition files) might not be up to date. Also, its possible that the company your using does not have the malicious software in their "banned" list yet. I don't know what provider you use for your protection, but typically with virus and antispyware software you get what you pay for generally speaking.
What do you think of stopzilla?
I personally don't like STOPzilla. STOPzilla messed up my computer- big time. After downloading STOPzilla, I found that every time I got on, STOPzilla did a 10 minute scan.... where I couldn't acsess anything. It did this scan weathere I wanted it to or not. Also, STOPzilla, I believe, allowed viruses to be downloaded on my computer. A week after I downloaded STOPzilla, ThinkPoint, a supposed "cure" showed up without me downloading or buying anything. ThinkPoint made the internet unacseseble. After reaserch, I found that ThinkPoint was, infat, "let in" by STOPzilla. ThinPoink, a known virus, installed other virus "cures". For example: Antivirus Action ThinkPiont Version0.2 and other files. You can reaserch STOPzilla at other places, but you will only get how wonderful it is. IT IS NOT WONDERFUL. My mother had to do a complete recovery on my computer to get rid of Antivirus Action. And where did this come from? STOPzilla. I advise you not to download it.

Yes. Uniblue Registry Booster is much faster than STOPzilla. When I scane it, Uniblue Registry Booster was done and STOPzilla was only at 2%!

Is stopzilla free?
Yes and no. It is free to the extent at which it scans for malware, viruses, etc. on your PC. If any are found, they will quarantine the viruses, as any other antivirus software. At this point, STOPzilla is free as it gives you the option to purge the quarantined files, which may be all you need if only rogue files have been installed. However, if the infected files are important in running your PC, etc. then the full version is required, in order to repair REPAIR and RECOVER the infected files.
