Measures of heat?

a thermometer Actually a calorimeter is the device used to measure heat, but a thermometer is one part of it. Thermal energy (the energy associated with atoms and molecules) IS measured by using a thermometer. However, the word heat indicates that the person is focused on the net amount of that thermal energy that is either gained or lost when 2 substances of differing amounts of thermal energy come into contact with each other. In this case, we are only interested in the amount transferred from the higher one to the lower one, as nature tries to reach equilibrium. Of course, this equipment only gives us the change in temperature after this exchange of energy. We still have to use the heat formula because mass and density differences between the 2 substances are also factors. Hope this helps clarify.

When energy is transformed is some lost or gained?

there is an increase in entropy in the universe.

Does radiant energy spread out in all direction?

Yes it does, because lets say if you turn on a light bulb, then the light tries to go as far as it can in all directions. A light bulb is just one example of radiant energy.

Why does distortion happen in welding?

As metal is heated it expands. Heat travels thru metals causing it to expand while the adjacent areas are relatively cool and not expanding. The areas in the weld zone become molten and expand more than the rest of the metal. As this metal expands the cooler area around it prevents it from doing so causing the material to move in a different direction. As the metal cools it contracts and tries to return to its original size/shape causing some of the cooler metal to prevent that from happening. Preheat and postheat can keep this from becoming too severe. Cast iron must be treated this way to prevent it from cracking.

How does a mousetrap car use potential energy?

A standard mousetrap works first by luring the mouse with peanut butter or cheese. When a mouse smells the food that is located in the mousetrap and comes to take a bite, the trap snaps and traps the mouse suffocating it and squishing it to death.

What is type of material that tries to prevent the flow of thermal energy?

We call material that acts in that way a thermal insulator. Sometimes we shorten it to just insulation, but we need to be clear that we're talking about thermal energy and not, say, electrical energy.

Does energy need to be absorbed to convert a liquid to a gas?

Yeah obviously.... Any matter in this universe tries to be more disordered state. By absorbing energy, Liquid state, in which molecules move less freely tries to be move more freely by absorbing energy and changing into gaseous state..

Why does soil release more energy when cooled?

When something is cool, it tries to absorb energy from it's surroundings. When something is cooled off, it releases energy during that cooling process.
