Gutenberg was probably the first European to use movable type printing, in around 1439, although the claim that he was the inventor of the printing press is necessarily unsubstantiated; his invention of a method of using movable types to print books probably involved a press, but we have no way of knowing its form or to what degree it may have been a simple adaptation of existing screw-presses used to press grapes, cloth and paper. Whatever the truth of the technology he developed, he was certainly the earliest European printer successfully to print a substantial book, and appears to have perfected the combination of movable type, printing inks and some kind of printing press in order to make book printing possible for the first time, on a commercial footing.
